Melrose Perium is an orphan who lives in the streets. Her mother died when she was a child, and her father disappeared several weeks later, with not even a clue to where he went.

Melrose strives to support herself, but she is left starving for several days. She hardly ever falls asleep, afraid she won't wake up again.

One day, as she is in her old home, a phantom of some sort calls out to her. And, revealing his identity, it is Jack Stapiano, also an orphan, and he on the run.

At first, tension is between them, for Melrose doesn't trust people easily. But slowly, they start to become friends.

And one day, he is gone.

In this emotional drama, Melrose ventures out to find a friend, a comfort, a joy, and a hope. But most of all, she yearns to find her father, who disappeared from her life without a trace. And without this mysterious boy, that will be almost impossible, for he not only holds the biggest key to their survival in the world, but the secret to finding her life.
